Hero Bio:
Henry Joseph Gosse was born in Reno, Nevada, November 6th, 1897. He was a typical Nevada boy, strong of purpose, kind of heart, courageous, generous, and a great lover of Nature. He was raised in Reno and was in the Senior Class of the High School at the time of his enlistment. Having chosen Agriculture as his course, he expected to attend the University of Nevada and finish at the Agricultural College at Davis, California. On April 23d, 1917, he enlisted in the First Field Artillery, and was sent to Fort McDowell, Angel Island, California. On May 19th he sailed with his company on the transport “Sherman” for Honolulu. While on the transport he contracted spinal meningitis, and died in Honolulu on July 27th, 1917.
His mother reached Honolulu before he passed away. He now lies in the Reno Cemetery where he was buried with military honors on August 15th, 1917. He was escorted to his last resting place by detachments of troops, veterans of former wars, State Officials, the Governor’s Staff, other orders, and a great gathering of townspeople. Harry Gosse was but a school boy when he heard the call of his Country, and although a lover of peace, with the horror of killing anything, even the lowliest of God’s creatures, he answered the call with all the fervor and exalted purpose of a true patriot; yet, God, in his infinite wisdom, called him home before he had reached the scene of conflict. His parents, Henry J. and Josephine M. Gosse, and his sister, Mrs. R. C. Stoddard, survive him. They reside at Reno, Nevada.
